Background

The History of the Permian Basin Genealogical Society goes back to April 10, 1961, when a group of 29 Odessans and 1 Pyote resident, all interested in genealogy, met at the Ector
County Library to exchange data and to help one another on their lineage.

Mrs. L. G. (Vi) Jackson presided at this meeting.  Two months later, June 26, 1961 the group organized the Ector County Genealogical Society with John Ben Sheppard as their President.  Malcolm Manns was Vice-President, Oma Leo Kiser as Secretary, Vi Jackson as Treasurer and Vernice Hillier as Reporter.

The Genealogical Collection, housed in the South West  Dept. of the Ector County Library, served the interest of other Permian Basin residents.

The Society's name was changed on October 9, 1961 to the PERMIAN BASIN GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY and the Constitution and Bylaws were adopted January 8, 1962.  For the Next 7 years the Society operated under this document with some revisions,
expanding its membership throughout the Permian Basin.

In order to incorporate under the State of Texas as a non-profit educational corporation, a
new Constitution and Bylaws were drawn up and adopted November 18, 1668 by the membership.

On January 27, 1969, the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws of the PERMIAN BASIN GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, were adopted. Charter # 257085 dated February 6, 1969 was issued by the Secretary of the State of Texas to the PERMIAN BASIN GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, Inc., as a non-profit Educational Corporation.

The purpose of the Society is to conduct educational programs, to promote interest in Genealogical and Historical Research, to collect and preserve documents pertaining to the history of the Permian Basin, and to help build for our area a large collection at the Ector County Library

All books, quarterlies and manuscripts donated to and bought by the Society and all exchange quarterlies are donated to the SW-Genealogical department at the Ector county  Library, Odessa, Texas as part of a permanent collection that is open to the public.  Microfilm donated and bought by the Society is placed in the MF collection in the SW-Genealogy Dept.

THE TREESHAKER, a publication of the Permian Basin Genealogy Society is published in April and October of each year.  Its officers and members do not assume responsibility for errors of fact or judgment in the materials published in the Treeshaker.  Every effort is made
to publish reliable genealogical and historical source material.
