PROGRAM TOPICS:
SCALLYWAGS, ROGUES AND RUFFS: ALL
THOSE ANCESTORS WE DON'T TALK ABOUT
Every family has them, skeletons in the closet - those
things that are not talked about in front of children, and when they are
talked about then only in whispers and euphemisms. How do you access the
records of prisons, asylums and courts to find the truth behind the story?
PLOWING THROUGH THE LAND RECORDS TO FIND
YOUR ANCESTOR
Americans were so "land minded" that over 3/4
of all males who lived to maturity (well into the 19th century) owned
land. Land records exist from the beginning of the first permanent
settlements in America and the older the record the more genealogical data
there may be.
WHO CARES WHO THEIR NEIGHBORS WERE? YOU
DO! THAT'S WHO!
Your ancestor did not live a solitary life. He
lived, he loved, he hated, he sued, he was sued, and he died all within a
particular group of people. Locating these people may be the only way to
get to your ancestor and the questions concerning him.
TAX RECORDS OR WHY DID
SCARLETT MAKE A DRESS OF HER MOTHER'S DRAPES?
Using tax lists you may determine when an ancestor came
of age, estimate the time of death, or maybe identify a nameless wife.
Learn where to find these tax lists and how to access them.
